Our Mission
Gentle Giants was formed to facilitate the rescue of draft and draft cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect
Horse slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. Draft horses are most at risk as they attract a higher profit for the meat buyers due to their size and weight. We attend the same public auctions and outbid the meat buyer. We believe this is the best way to stop the flow of profits into the slaughter system as our donor’s money goes directly to purchasing the horse and no money goes into the hands of a meat buyer or horse broker.
When new horses arrive to the rescue they are quarantined for 21 days to ensure any contagious illnesses can be contained and addressed appropriately. During that time, our vet will assess for any ailments or injuries and our team will begin the rehabilitation process.
Horses that are ready to exit quarantine are then evaluated for either our training program or placement at our Sanctuary. Our Sanctuary houses horses who are available to be adopted as companions.
When the horses have completed their training, they are ready to be adopted into their forever homes. We remain in contact with all adopters for the lifetime of the horse and are always here to provide support and resources to ensure a successful adoption.
