Sage

Meet our newest arrival, Sage. This gorgeous Belgian mare was found abandoned on a mountaintop in West Virginia. She carries the scars of a life of servitude but also of a life on her own. There is no way to tell how long this precious soul was by herself before she was located by the Appalachian Legacy Alliance, an organization dedicated to protecting the feral herds in the Appalachian Mountains. Based on her condition when she was located, we estimate that she was probably alone on that mountain top for several months. She was thin, dehydrated, and covered in mats and brambles. As soon as A.L.I. located her, they asked if we could take her. Of course we said yes! Her rescue was difficult for both Erin from A.L.I. and Sage due to the terrain of the mountain and Sage’s delicate condition. It took careful planning to safely bring her to the trailer, which was parked at the closest access point miles away. Sage trudged onward, putting one hoof in front of the other, following the gentle voice of her rescuer guiding her to safety. She has now settled into life here at Gentle Giants, and she truly seems happy to be behind the safety and security of fences again! She has already gained some weight and loves to be with our staff as much as possible, gently nudging anyone within her reach for a little pet or a spare cookie, and we are always happy to oblige! We are so thankful that she was found before it was too late for her. With patience, hard work, and boundless love, we will nurse Sage back to health and she will be surrounded by friends for the rest of her life.
